The aim of the study was to investigate the fate of 15N in the soil-plant system of a mixed cropping system (pupunha, cupuacu, castanha-do-Para, urucu). Urucu (annatto), cupuacu and pupunha (peach palm) took up more than 90% of the fertilizer under their own canopy. After two weeks castanha-do-Para (Brazil nut) took up more than 70% of the N fertilized to the neighboring tree crops (pupunha, 40%; urucu, 25%; cupuacu, 8%). At the ende of rainy season castanha-do-Para even took up more than 80% from the neighboring trees (pupunha, 42%; urucu, 36%; cupuacu; 6%). Furthermore, pupunha e castanha-do-Para could prevent nutrient leaching with their deep roots and take up N from the subsoil N pool better than urucu and cupuacu. Castanha-do-Para was able to effectively capture N and may contribute to nutrient recycling in the agroforestry. However, this nutrient capture may also lead to nutrient competition and fertilizer placement and amount has to be adjusted accordingly. |
